Did you know that essential oils can be used in conjunction with acupuncture treatments? At Levity, we are always diffusing essential oils, both in the lobby area and in all of the rooms. Not only do they smell amazing, but they also have a  wide-range of therapeutic benefits as well. One of my favorite scents to diffuse in my treatment room is a blend called ‘Serenity’ from Doterra, it is a calming blend made up of; lavender, marjoram, Roman chamomile, ylang ylang, Hawaiian sandalwood and vanilla bean. 14292515_616347977678_7819869329392799570_n

Outside of using the oils aromatically through diffusing them, I also use the oils on acupuncture points either instead of, or in addition to, using needles. When I apply the oils topically, I use a carrier oil (usually coconut oil) to ensure that the oil penetrates deeply in to the body. I use the same process in selecting oils as I do in selecting acupuncture points and so the oil I choose will have a similar therapeutic effect to the point that I choose to put it on (thereby increasing the overall effect). For example,  I might use a grounding oil like ylang ylang on a point known as Kd 1 (Kidney 1) which is also used to aid in grounding. Kidney 1 is on the sole of the foot and is very tender to needle so using the oil enables me to enlist the grounding effect of this point without having to put a needle in it. I also use oils that help to promote blood circulation and reduce inflammation over an area that has suffered an injury to aid in the healing process.

Using oils also allows me to treat those that have a phobia of needles. Many people aren’t too excited by the prospect of being stuck with needles. While acupuncture is a powerful tool, I don’t find it particularly useful to have someone lying on the treatment table in a cold sweat because they are so terrified of the needles. Using essential oils, enables me to use the principles of Chinese medicine while making it available to those that would otherwise shy away because of their fear of needles.
