Did anyone see the picture I posted on my instagram last week? (@hollyleeverwellness). In the post I promised a blog about moxibustion, and as promised, here it is! Moxa has a very, let’s say, unique scent. When I burn moxa in the office, I typically get a lot of questions about said scent. Not everyone loves the smell, but many of my patients (and I) do love the smell. Moxibustion is a technique that involves lighting the dried herb called “Moxa” (Mugwort or Artemisia Vulgaris) on fire and allowing the embers to burn over an area on the body. This herb is warm, acrid and bitter. These qualities mean that it can aid in promoting blood circulation, and warming areas where there is cold. There are several different forms of moxa, but I typically use only two of them in the clinic.

Another period post, hooray! As a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist, I absolutely love working with women’s health. This includes everything from period problems (PMS, pain, irregularity, no period), infertility, pregnancy, post-partum and menopause. I am fascinated by the complexity of the female reproductive system and not just as it relates to being able to having babies, but also as a reflection of overall health for women. Many women that I treat have been prescribed the birth control pill to “regulate” their cycles and to “alleviate” PMS symptoms. You can read more about my thoughts on that here. Women are told that they just have to suffer through pregnancy symptoms, get through postpartum challenges and continue to struggle as their body shifts in to menopause. This is just not the case!

Although menstrual irregularities and symptoms that occur around the menstrual cycle are so common, many women don’t realize that it doesn’t have to be this way! Gynecologists often prescribe the birth control pill to regulate women’s cycles and to alleviate symptoms connected to the menstrual cycle. But the pill is not the only answer, nor is it a particularly good answer! The birth control pill works by providing your body with hormones that it might otherwise not be making enough of. These synthetic hormones are useful in providing you with peace of mind in that you start to enjoy regular, pain-free, acne-free cycles without the emotional highs and lows commonly associated with premenstrual syndrome. However, what the pill is not addressing is the reasons why your body wasn’t making these hormones appropriately in the first place.
