Another period post, hooray! As a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist, I absolutely love working with women’s health. This includes everything from period problems (PMS, pain, irregularity, no period), infertility, pregnancy, post-partum and menopause. I am fascinated by the complexity of the female reproductive system and not just as it relates to being able to having babies, but also as a reflection of overall health for women. Many women that I treat have been prescribed the birth control pill to “regulate” their cycles and to “alleviate” PMS symptoms. You can read more about my thoughts on that here. So lately I have been obsessing over Goji berries, or Gou Qi Zi as they are known in Chinese medicine. I have been using them in my oatmeal, yogurt and tea and today I made muffins with them! I love baking and I can’t say that there are too many resources for baking in Chinese medicine literature. Most recipes I come across are for soups and congees and while they are delicious, I just love baking more than I love cooking. So I often create my own little recipes for muffins and breads that incorporate foods that are known to assist with certain functions in the body in Chinese medicine. You can check out another muffin recipe geared towards blood deficiency here.
